In short

What is a custom CMS?

A CMS (content management system) is the admin where you edit your website’s text, pages and images. A custom CMS is built around your content: your own fields, your own page blocks and roles for your team. Sharp Creations builds one from €4,500 excl. VAT, with a fixed price up front. Once paid you get the code and the Git repository, so you are not tied to us. We work from Julianadorp (the Netherlands) for businesses across the country. This website itself runs on a CMS we built.

Honest advice: for a five-page site that rarely changes, your own CMS is usually overkill. A simple website is cheaper and just as good. If your marketing team works in HubSpot, see having a HubSpot website built.

Technology

How a custom CMS works.

Admin and website kept apart

In a so-called headless setup your content lives in a database with an admin screen, and the website fetches that content to display it. We usually build the website in Next.js and store content in Firebase (Firestore) or another database that fits. The benefit: fast pages, few parts that can be attacked, and the same content can later feed an app or newsletter.

Blocks instead of free formatting

You build pages from blocks: a heading with text, a row of services, FAQs, a form. Each block has fixed fields. That way a colleague can create a new page without the layout shifting or the brand style breaking.

Logging in and permissions

Sign-in can use email or your Google or Microsoft account. Roles determine who may do what, and those rules apply in the database itself, not just on screen. Everything runs over an encrypted connection, with hosting in the EU.

Findable without extra plugins

Titles, descriptions, clean URLs, a sitemap and structured data are part of the system. Pages are rendered on the server, so Google can read them straight away. If a page moves, a redirect makes sure visitors and Google find it again.

How we work

How we build your CMS.

  1. 01

    Inventory

    What do you publish, who does what, and where does your current system get in the way?

  2. 02

    Model and fixed price

    Fields, blocks and roles on paper, with a screen design and a fixed price.

  3. 03

    Build and fill

    In short rounds. We move existing content over, with redirects for old URLs.

  4. 04

    Training and handover

    A short training for your team, documentation and the code in your repository.

Honest advice

When a custom CMS pays off, and when it does not.

It pays off if you publish structured content, such as vacancies, projects, locations or products; if several people with different roles keep the site up to date; if the site must connect to your CRM, ERP or booking system; if you are done with slow pages and plugins that break after an update; or if you publish in several languages.

It does not pay off if your site is small and rarely changes (choose a Starter site), if you want lots of ready-made extensions (choose WordPress), or if your marketing runs in HubSpot (choose HubSpot CMS). We will say so honestly when a simpler route fits better.

Price

What drives the price.

A website with a custom CMS starts at €4,500 excl. VAT. What determines the price:

  • the number of content types and blocks;
  • roles and approval steps, for example an editor who publishes after sign-off;
  • multiple languages;
  • integrations with other systems;
  • moving existing content;
  • the design of the website itself.

Hosting and maintenance are charged monthly; the amount is in the quote up front.

Ask your question
What does a custom CMS cost?
A website with a custom CMS costs from €4,500 excl. VAT. The price depends on the number of content types, roles, languages and integrations. You get a fixed price up front.
Is a custom CMS more expensive to maintain than WordPress?
Usually not: there are fewer parts that need updates and no plugins getting in each other’s way. You do need a developer for new features. That can be us, or someone else, because the code is yours.
Am I tied to you with a custom CMS?
No. Once paid you get the code and the Git repository, with documentation. We build with mainstream technology (Next.js and TypeScript) that many developers know.
Can my WordPress content move to a custom CMS?
Yes. We move pages, articles and images over and create a redirect for every old URL, so you keep your Google rankings.
Can several colleagues work in the CMS at once?
Yes. Everyone signs in with their own account, and roles determine who may write, publish or only view.
Is a headless CMS good for SEO?
Yes, as long as pages are rendered on the server, as Next.js does. Google then sees the complete page straight away, with titles, descriptions and structured data.
How long does it take to build a custom CMS?
That depends on the number of content types and integrations; the planning is in the proposal. We usually start within 1 to 2 weeks of your go-ahead.

What do you want to manage yourself?

Tell us briefly what you publish and who maintains the site. You usually hear back within one working day, with a fixed price or a few focused questions.
