Reading Google Search Console for beginners: what do those numbers mean?

Search Console is free and shows exactly which keywords you appear for. An explanation of the numbers that matter — without jargon.

Google Search Console is the free tool that shows how you perform in Google: which keywords you appear for, how often (impressions), how often people click, your click rate (CTR) and your average position. For beginners these are the four numbers that count. It also helps you submit your sitemap, find indexing problems and see which pages do well. It’s indispensable for knowing whether you’re found and for what — exactly the answer to ‘are we being found on Google yet?’.

The four numbers that count

  • Impressions. How often you appeared in the results. Rising means you’re shown for more searches.
  • Clicks. How often people actually clicked through to your site.
  • CTR (click rate). Clicks divided by impressions. Low CTR at a good position? Work on your title and description.
  • Average position. Where you rank on average. Toward 1 is better; 11 to 8 means progress.

What to do with it

  • Find opportunities. Keywords where you sit at position 5-15 can often be nudged to the top with a small push.
  • Improve your CTR. Many impressions but few clicks? Make your title and description more appealing.
  • Spot drops. Falling clicks at equal position? Possibly AI Overviews.

Indispensable for every site

Beyond the numbers, in Search Console you submit your sitemap, see indexing problems (pages Google can’t find or show) and check whether a new page has been picked up. Setting it up takes ten minutes and is free. We also show this data right in the admin, so you see it next to your traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Search Console free?

Yes, completely free. You only need a Google account and access to your domain to verify it. It’s the first tool every website owner should set up.

What’s the difference from Google Analytics?

Search Console shows how you appear in the results (before the click); Analytics shows what visitors do on your site (after the click). Together they give the full picture.

How long until I see data?

After verification Search Console starts collecting right away, but expect a few days for the first meaningful numbers. Trends only become clear over weeks.

What’s a good CTR?

It depends strongly on your position and the type of search. More important than an absolute number: a low CTR at a good position is a signal to improve your title and description.
