What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization explained for SMEs

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) means structuring your content so AI search engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — pick up your answer and name your brand. Where SEO targets a blue link in Google, AEO targets the direct answer the AI gives your customer. Good SEO stays the foundation (a fast, technically sound site with strong content), but you add clarity and structure — answer-first writing, schema.org and FAQs — so models can easily quote you. Because most businesses aren't doing this yet, there's an early-mover advantage right now.

What exactly is AEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: shaping your content so an AI answer engine recognises, trusts and cites it as the answer to your audience's question. The goal isn't the click to your page, but the AI adopting your expertise — with attribution.

You'll also see the term GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). In practice people mean the same thing: being visible and cited in AI-generated answers.

Why AEO matters now

More and more people ask ChatGPT directly, or read the AI answer at the top of Google instead of clicking through. Many owners notice their Google traffic dropping while they still rank well — the engine answers the question itself.

  • If you're not named in that answer, you don't exist for that searcher.
  • AI answers often cite only 3-5 sources — the race for those spots is still open.
  • Most businesses don't optimise for this yet: start now and you gain a head start.

AEO and SEO: not a replacement, a layer on top

AEO doesn't replace SEO. A fast, technically sound site with strong content stays the foundation. AEO adds a layer of clarity and structure so AI models can pick up your content. In short: SEO gets Google to find you, AEO gets AI to cite you. More in our article AEO vs SEO.

How to start with AEO

  • Write answer-first. Answer the implicit search query in the first 80-120 words, in plain language.
  • Structure machines can read. Clear headings, short paragraphs, lists and FAQ sections.
  • Schema.org / structured data. Mark up articles, FAQs and your organisation so AI understands context. See schema for AI.
  • Entity & authority. Consistent company info, authorship and sources that back your claims.
  • llms.txt. An AI guide on your domain. See llms.txt explained.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap. SEO targets a ranking in classic search results; AEO targets a mention in the AI answer. Good SEO is the base AEO builds on — you do them together, not instead of each other.

Does AEO work if I'm small?

Especially then. Since many large players don't yet optimise deliberately for AI answers, a sharp SME page with a clear, well-structured answer gets cited surprisingly often.

How do I measure if AEO works?

Ask your key questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and see whether (and how) you're named. Also track referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics and impressions in Search Console.

How long until I see results?

Like SEO, it's a build-up, not a switch. Technical improvements (schema, structure) get picked up within weeks; authority and consistent mentions build over months.
